Antique Silver Soup and Sauce Tureens
SILVER SOUP AND SAUCE TUREENS
Soup tureens are found from the early 1730’s - the accompanying antique sauce tureens date from the early English George III period and French silver styles. They follow the soup tureens exactly in design. As only the well-to-do have space or money for soup tureens it is extremely difficult to sell a bad one - so only go for a perfect example. They are by no means uncommon. Sauce tureens are perhaps slightly more difficult to find, especially in good condition. They are rather more domesticated in size, which is perhaps why. Nevertheless, a pair is still cheaper than one soup tureen. On both, look for thin spots both sides, and for torn-out and repaired feet. Some early soup tureens have the cover fully marked, usually on the bezel but most later ones have only the lion passant and maker’s mark, and the duty mark if appropriate. After 1790 the date letter is often included as well. but the leopard’s head is always omitted.
One sauce tureen is a quarter to one-third the price of a pair. Four are very little more than twice a pair. A pair of soup tureens is very little more than twice one, if at all. About 1735. Very fine and heavy, with laid-on strapwork. Incidentally, although the silver cover decoration may be embossed, the decoration on the body is almost invariably applied, so that the inside presents a smooth surface for cleaning.
About 1745 silver tureen with absolutely everything! The decoration usually consists of vegetables or game used for making the soup - almost every variety can be found somewhere here.
A rather smaller silver soup tureen, with very attractive feet and handles, and a rather French style guilloche border. About 1755 - 1765.
Chinoiserie, about 1765. These, from the Harewood family, are virtually unique.
Soup tureen
Pair of silver sauce tureens of Transitional style . The shape of the silver body is late George II, the decoration pure Adam. About 1765.
Pure Adam. From the proportion of the silver cover, one would guess it to be a sauce tureen, but a soup tureen would look little different.
Pair of sauce tureens
About 1785 antique silver tureen, with very popular hollow fluting. Again, these could be soup tureens or sauce tureens.
The plainest type of boat-shaped tureen. The silver sauce tureen is a little clumsy.
About 1805, soup tureens develop feet again. This rather elegant long oval tureen is of excellent quality.
A really exotic pair of antique silver sauce tureens with stands. Stands, although common enough with French tureens, are rare in England, and almost double the value: as these are so fine anyway, they are very valuable.
A very popular type of silver tureen - about 1815 - 1825. A Paul Storr pattern.
