Antique Sterling Silver Candlesticks and Candelabra
December 2nd, 2009
Antique Sterling Silver Candlesticks and Candelabra
George I type, one of the most typical and desirable patterns. Best type of massive appearance, like these. Made 1715 - 1730. About six inches high twenty-five ounces.
Typical pair of candlesticks of the period and circa 1690 - 1705. Similar construction to previous pairs hand raised from sheet. Often with embossed cartouche on base below column. This type of candlestick has not
been very popular in recent years, owing to its light weight, and rather rough appearance, whilst not possessing the rarity, plainness and character of the earlier ones of similar construction. If there is a cartouche, check for thin spots where it may have been erased. Also look for holes in fluting and on corners.
Queen Anne type, circa 1700 - 1715 with round base and octagonal column. Cast, about six inches.
George I “diamond-base” pattern, rather more unusual but not more valuable. These have original armorials, 1715 - 1725. About six inches twenty-three ounces.
Another type with hexagonal base. Circa 1715 - 1725. About six inches.
If larger or exceptionally heavier plus 10% - 30%.
Square base with convex corners circa 1728 - 1740. Very popular pattern. About six inches twenty-four ounces. This pair with original armorials.
Popular pattern made 1735 - 1745. Note column is becoming more decorative. Also note nozzles, which may or may not be marked (but only with lion and maker’s mark) which began to be used about this period. Little difference to value. Average height, without nozzles, seven inches twenty-five to thirty ounces.
Slightly unusual type 1735 - 1745. About six and a half inches - twenty-three ounces.
Typical Irish design 1715 - 1730. Usually rather small, about five inches. May be marked in the well, as this example, or on the outside or inside edge of the base, or underneath. Usually marked on capitals. About
twenty ounces.
An exceptional example of the previous type. Note finely chased leaf motifs on the shoulders, more complicated outlines of capital and collars, original nozzles. Exceptional size and weight, nine inches thirty-eight ounces.
Another pattern 1735 - 1745. About six and a half inches twenty-three ounces.
Another pattern about 1730. About six inches twenty-four ounces.
A rococo pair 1745 - 1755. Not so desirable as the previous type. About eleven inches forty-five ounces.
Caryatid candlesticks circa 1750, usually by John Cafe. For some reason, these often seem to come, more often than other patterns, in sets of four or more. About ten inches in height about forty ounces a pair.
Slightly more decorative base 1745 - 1755. Usually heavy, about thirty or more ounces seven inches.
An extremely rare pair of figure candlesticks, of a type made about 1750, modelled as Blackamoors. About six inches high, and should be marked on base, figure if separate, wax pan and capital.
One of a fine pair in the French taste. These could be made any time between 1740 and 1770. About nine inches in height
forty ounces a pair.
Typical pair four shell corner candlesticks circa 1750 - 1760. Small light pairs about six inches, twenty-five ounces. Better pairs seven inches twenty-eight to thirty ounces.
Similar period to two previous pairs, but ’six-shell’ bases. This pair can be identified in all probability as Scottish, because of the rather large and clumsy capitals.
The development of the six-shell base candlestick 1760 - 1770. The sunk-centre’ has gone. About ten and a half inches — thirty-five ounces.
Basically similar to the previous pair, these have flat-chased decoration which is almost certainly original. Nevertheless, it reduces the value.
The development of the four-shell base candlesticks 1755 - 1700. The candlesticks no longer have the ’sunk-centre’ i.e. the stem rising from a saucer-like depression in the base. Rather taller, and somewhat less
valuable.
A fine rococo pair.
Stepped square base candlestick 1760 - 1770. Developed from previous example, but less valuable. Shows an alternative place for engraving the original armorials. Instead of the round nozzle shown, later examples
often have square fluted nozzle repeating motif at base of stein. About ten and a half inches forty-five ounces.
Unusual for a pair of Corinthian candlesticks, these are cast, rather attractive in design, and somewhat smaller than the previous example. They are very much more valuable. About ten inches.
PSquare-base, ’sunk-centre’ candlestick, 1755 - 1765. Very popular type, especially if very heavy, with broad base. About ten and a half inches thirty-five ounces. Fine pairs up to fifty ounces.
These candlesticks were cast, and made in London about 1765. Without the nozzles, and smaller, they could have been made about 1700. As with most candlesticks of rather unusual design, they are of fine quality.
About ten inches high thirty-five ounces.
Candelabra all matching and fully marked of the period. Extremely rare and desirable in this condition.
The return to the candlestick made from sheet about 1760 either chased by hand, as this one obviously is, or stamped by the new process being pioneered in Sheffield at this period the start of the industrial
revolution. Nevertheless, the capital and nozzle-top are still cast. Height about eleven inches. Not a very popular pattern.
Typical Adam design, die-stamped in Sheffield about 1775. This type of loaded candlestick (in many different patterns). About twelve inches.
This is a very fine pair of London made cast candlesticks in the Adam style, made about 1775. The execution and finish is of the highest quality, and all the different motifs cohere brilliantly into the whole. They are about twelve and a half inches in height, about fifty ounces in weight, and by comparison with the loaded candlesticks, are well worth their value today.
A pair of silver candlesticks made in 1785 by John Schofield, with a pair of Sheffield Plate branches to match. This expedient was often adopted with London and Sheffield made candelabra as the branches were
obviously rather costly compared to the candlesticks. Providing the branches are the right ones, this combination is very popular today, still on grounds of cost.
Another Sheffield made loaded candlestick of rather ‘Gothic’ design. This is actually Victorian in date, but is undoubtedly made about 1780. These dies continued in use until early in the twentieth century, which accounts for the authentic appearance of man% Victorian candlesticks! Some are still in use today, although many, tragically broken up for scrap as firms went out of business, or changed to new lines. About twelve inches.
Another pair of cast London made candlesticks of slightly later date about 1780. The baluster column, as opposed to the more usual tapered ones of the next examples, is comparatively uncommon. About eleven and a half inches high, about thirty ounces.
This pair of candlesticks were made in London about 1790 by John Schofield, who specialised in candlesticks, and is considered the best candlestick maker of his period. They have the beaded borders typical of the 1780’s and the hollow fluting which is so very much admired today. An unusual feature is the little border of anthemian decoration under the shoulder. Height twelve inches, weight about thirty-five ounces. Of their type, this is as good as you could get, so anything less good should be less in price.
A loaded Sheffield made pair about the end of the century. They are oval in section, never seen in London-made candlesticks. About eleven inches.
A small pair of candlesticks by Schofield, only seven inches high, and intended for a dressing table or desk. These are slightly later, about 1800, as one can tell from the gadroon border.
A pair of large four-light candelabra by Matthew Boulton, the foremost metal worker and industrialist of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His factories were in Birmingham and whilst turning out large
quantities of the finest ‘Sheffield plate’, with the double star mark, he also designed and made steam engines, ormolu mounts for furniture, ormolu clock cases, and every other sort of metal work. Many of his designs, more familiar in plate, were also made up in silver. Note the basic similarity in design to the pair of Paul Storr candlesticks which follow Boulton made all the Sheffield Plate warmers and dish covers for Storr’s silver dishes. Note also that, because the candlesticks are loaded, the actual weight of silver is stamped by the hallmark 25.6 twenty-seven to thirty inches high.
A fine pair of four-light candelabra which could be by Storr, Smith, or Rundell, 1810 - 1820. Twenty-four inches high, very heavy and cast throughout, often gilt, these candelabra, whilst not so popular as the earlier
and smaller ones, fetch a very good price! Every separate piece must be marked.
By one of the others If not gilt, about 10% less
The same thing as candelabra.
An interesting pair of Sheffield made candelabra of rather better-than-usual quality. Made around 1810, they are fairly small and pretty, and will fetch a quite good price, though nothing like the slightly earlier London
made ones. About nineteen inches.
Birmingham made candelabra and candlesticks made by Matthew Boulton about 1805. Elegant design, especially in the candelabra branch, with simplicity. Next best thing to London ones, as they are equally attractive in appearance, which is not always the case with provincial examples.
A fine pair of Regency candlesticks by Paul Storr. They are about fourteen inches high, and weigh about seventy ounces the pair. They could be made and the price would not alter much. any time between 1810.
Strangely enough, candlesticks of this period are far less common than those of the eighteenth century, presumably because of the use of colza oil lamps for domestic lighting, or massive candelabra for dining.
A pair of cast candelabra made in 1825 by Robert Garrard. In this and the pair of candlesticks following will be seen his liking for copying eighteenth century rococo, and his fine quality. This pattern was probably
available from Garrards until the end of the nineteenth century. They would be about twenty-five inches high, and weigh about 300 ounces the pair.
An attractive pair of candelabra, the stem rather heavy, but the detail and decoration very well thought out and executed. Made about 1870.
The value of unloaded Victorian candelabra is reasonably related to weight. For rococo or floral ones (not too lumpy) which are the most popular. 4 - 7 per ounce before 1868
Another Sheffield made pattern circa 1815 - 1825. About ten and a half inches high. Loaded.
Just for fun an extremely rare pair of wall lights made in 1698, and engraved with original arms of the Earl of Derby. These are fully marked on the back plate and on the front (as you can see) and also bear the lion’s
head erased on the candle socket. One likes to see a lot of hall-marks on objects as rare as these, to be sure they are genuine! I would doubt their authenticity if the only marks were those visible in the photograph.
About twelve inches high.
A pair of Victorian cast candlesticks of superb quality. These were made by Garrard, in the style of about 1750. These were made in 1840, and are about thirteen inches high, and would weigh about sixty ounces the
pair, or more.
One of a pair of candelabra and a pair of candlesticks, of typical Sheffield design, made circa 1820 - 1835. They were made by many different firms, and this design of base can also be seen on wine coolers especially.
The candlestick, about ten and a half inches, loaded.
And another for fun a superb set of snuffers and stand probably just before 1700. Original arms. The snuffers should be fully marked on one half, lion’s head erased and maker on the other. The stand should be
marked like a candlestick, underneath. If all complete and as it should be:
if the stand is right, but snuffers are unmarked 650 snuffers alone of this period, fully marked for George I complete examples. More tapersticks, all loaded, 1768 to 1780.
Tapersticks are just like small candlesticks, usually just over half their height. The value of a single taperstick is about one third that of a pair of equivalent candlesticks. They were not used in pairs, and so pairs, being rare, are highly desirable. In spite of their small size, pairs are worth about the same price as a pair of equivalent candlesticks. They are made up to about 1775, when coiled wax tapers came into use, in all the styles of the candlesticks shown.
An early Victorian Sheffield or Birmingham made example 1830 - 1845.
